Guided Tissue Regeneration-New Gingival Attachment

Both free gingival and connective tissue graft procedures involve harvesting gum or connective tissue from the roof of the mouth (palate). Inherent in these procedures is the creation of a secondary wound site. Although a connective tissue graft currently represents the gold standard, there technologies are currently available to cover exposed root surfaces by employing biologic mediators of cellular activity and growth factors. With this approach, biologic mediators are placed onto the exposed root surfaces either alone or in combination with a biologic matrix. The remaining oral tissue (mucosa and gingivae) is then advanced to cover the exposed root. On a cellular level, the lost gum and root support can be reestablished while achieving root coverage. Feel free to discuss with Dr. Novack which option(s) may be right in your situation.
