How Frequent Should Periodontal Maintenance Appointments be?

How often are these Maintenance Appointments Necessary?

Everyone responds differently and therefore each patient has a different need for MAINTENANCE TREATMENT. The frequency of these appointments depends upon the degree of residual pocket depth following treatment, the effectiveness of your daily plaque control and your unique periodontal disease susceptibility.

It has been shown that those bacteria causing periodontal-gum disease can recur below the gum line within three months. For this reason, periodontal patients should be seen at least every three months to maintain good oral health.

Circumstances beyond one’s control (i.e. illness) can compromise one’s ability to perform effective oral hygiene-plaque control. Under these circumstances, increased plaque and calculus accumulate. Do not hesitate to request an earlier appointment if symptoms return or if you notice plaque and calculus forming.
